It is estimated that a total of 215, 990 women would be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States during 2004. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, next only to lung cancer. Breast cancer is the commonest cancer among American women. Breast cancer is a major health problem all over the world as well. As per the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the world in the year 2004. This demonstrates the magnitude of the health problem associated with breast cancer. Risk factors for Breat Cancer Even though the exact cause of development of breast cancer is unknown, several factors that may contribute or hasten the development of breast cancer have been identified. Some of these factors are clearly shown to increase the risk of breast cancer, while the role of some other factors is not clearly documented. Risk factors for breast cancer can be broadly divided in to two groups. The first group consists of risk factors for which the individual has no control, otherwise known as non-modifiable risk factors. This would include risk factors like increasing age, female gender, genetic factors, family history of breast cancer, personal history of breast cancer, and race. The other group consists of factors that can be modified by the person, so that the risk of development of breast cancer can be decreased. Modifiable risk factors for breast cancer include smoking, alcohol consumption, use of hormonal replacement therapy, decreased physical activity, obesity, increased intake of animal fat. It must be realized that in almost three fourth of the patients who develop breast cancer, there are no identifiable predisposing factors.
